Quantum of Solace Mini-Review

As James Bond seeks vengeance, he uncovers a secret organization known only as Quantum. As the mystery unravels, Bond finds himself teaming up with Camille who also seeks revenge.

Quantum of Solace is a delightful Bond film. It introduces/re-introduces the classic Bond Vodka-Martini drink, as well as the iconic gun-barrel sequence and even manages a nod to Goldfinger. It’s laden with cars and fair ladies and what more could you ask?

So what if it’s the shortest Bond movie. So what if they cut out a scene where Daniel Craig says “Bond, James Bond”. Plainly said, Quantum of Solace is a good Bond movie and frankly, better than the first one.

I don’t agree. Quantum of Solace was too short and didn’t feel like a Bond-movie at all, but rather a Bourne-movie. That said; Quantum of Solace is great action, but I missed the intelligent dialogue from Casino Royale. I was a bit underwhelmed.

I think the film looked great, Daniel Craig is superb but the plot was one of the worst i had to unravel for a very long time. So nowdays a super villan is someone who steals water? oh dear.

The only cars i saw where every new Ford model coming out this year. The “bond girls” were all predictable super strong agents. Its not the bourne ultimatum, bring back the gadgets, British cars and sexy laddies.

    I have a theory.

    It goes like this:

    1. If you know nothing of a movie, and have no expectations, you’ll judge it fairly.
    2. If you have great expectations the movie will be great, you’ll judge it more harshly.
    3. If you’ve been told the movie is horrible, yet it’s not Star Trek 5 bad, you may be lenient in your judgement.

I’m suspecting my review may be a 3, and you two may be 2s.

Does any of that make sense?

It makes perfectly sense. And I think you’re right. I had quite high expectations since Casino Royale. I didn’t get what I wanted and was disappointed – hence the harsh judgement. I gave Quantum of Solace a 3 out of 5. But after some thought I guess it should have been a 4 out of 5. Or at least a 3,5 of 5. 🙂

A big three or a small 4. This is a small 5, in my case, because I think it’s better than Royale which I gave a 4.

By the way, I’m rating on a 6 heart scale, because that way, if a film is mediocre (three on a 5 star scale), I have to decide if it’s mediocre good or mediocre bad (3 and 4 on a 6 star scale).

I thought it was pretty good, not great, but pretty good. I’m not much of a ‘bond fan’, but I enjoyed this one and would probably watch it again.

One unfortunate gripe I had, was that the opening car scene; while impressive, really demonstrated the limitations of 24fps footage. This was possibly amplified by the fact that I was sitting a little too close to the big screen, but surely I’m not the only one that noticed how jerky and hard to follow some of the shots were.
