Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Mini-Review

In many ways, Pirates 3 (subtitled At World’s End) is a better movie than the second one. It puts more weight on story and character development. It also takes itself slightly more seriously; after all, it is the end of a trilogy.

Personally, however, I never went to see the Pirates movies solely for their gripping storyline. I went to see the battles, the pirate coves, the leviathan sea monsters and odd mythical Caribbean locations we all remember from the Monkey Island games. Based on this, I actually preferred the lighter spirit of Dead Man’s Chest. Three stars is not bad, it’s just not great either.

I agree completely, not the best movie in the world, but still pirates and still pretty fun to watch. A few very good scenes made it worth it, but the movie on a whole was nothing special.

I remember we all came out of the theater with this confused look on our faces like, “Well that was… fun.” but sort of blindsided by the whole thing. Eh, it was ok I guess.

Exactly my / our feeling. Additionally (and without going too much into spoilers), I wasn’t a particular fan of the ending. I’m told, by the way, that scenes were cut out of the film that would have elaborated on the ending, and that there was an extra scene after the end credits that would have given some payoff to those cut scenes. Maybe a directors cut can clean things up and move the film out of “meh” waters.

The first one is still the best in terms of pacing, character interaction and humor. Also, Depp’s acting is by far more alive and witty and who would’ve thought Geoffrey Rush could pull off being a pirate, not me.

Plus, it surprised us all, considering leading up to that point most people were scratching their heads at the premise of a movie based on a Disney ride.

The other two are just icing on the cake, even if the cake itself tastes better.

Although, I will say that the beginning of “At World’s End” was pretty cool. The eerie pirate vibe had me hooked and it all seemed to unravel, both good and bad, from that point on.

On many accounts, I agree with you. I do, however, think that there were rather long passages that were pretty dull. While there were such passages in the 2nd one too (the beach fight?), the environments were so much more rich and monkey island’ish, so I actually prefer the second one.

    Totally!

I just saw the last one yesterday and was a bit disappointed, but overall I loved the trilogy as a whole. My favourite is the second because it’s the funniest.

Yes! It was very Monkey Islandish and that’s what made the second one so cool. However, “At World’s End” had a lot of exposition and while that’s not necessarily a horrible thing it did mess up the pacing.

What did you think of the surreal dream sequence in Davy Jone’s locker?

It was well done. I enjoyed it. It didn’t detract anything, I think, which I’d say is a feat considering how weird it was.

I was pretty bummed out about the ending,

I think everyone was really disapointed

about Will. I hope they have 4 movie so

    that Will will be free.
