Announcing Fauna Theme

It is with great pleasure I present to you my Fauna theme for WordPress.

A WordPress theme is a collection of templates that completely change the look and feel of a WordPress powered website. If you like the theme, which can also be seen on said website, go on ahead: download and install it.

Fauna means “a living organism characterized by voluntary movement”. Since Fauna also happens to be the current design for this website, and has undergone huge changes over the past year, I think it’s a pretty apt name. I uploaded a few really early stages of Fauna to flickr, so go on over and see a bit of the evolution.

Why?

So why am I choosing to take my own site design and make it widely available for public consumption and adoption? Well there are a few good reasons:

  • Public demand
Quite a few people have asked me for this design. For once I’d like to be able to say “you may—now go on, go run with it”.
  • Moving on
Eventually I want to refresh this Noscope design. Fauna has served me well for a long time now, but a list of reasons to redesign is mounting. When it finally happens (which is not soon, make no mistake), it would be a waste to simply release Fauna to the ether.
  • Donations
If by now you’ve visited the Fauna website in a separate tab, you might have noticed my rather cheesy encouragement for your donations to charity. Well I see it this way: I have a feeling quite a few people will visit the Fauna site. Some will download and install the theme. A few of those will be happy about it. If one of those gives to charity, it’ll be one more than zero, and that’s not bad.

What now?

For now I’m just happy to have this launched. Lately I’ve tried to really get things done. One of these things was to kick this out of the door. If I didn’t do it now, I might not do it ever.

In the next two three four months nothing much out of the usual will happen. I will continue to make my monthly installments and while a redesign will come eventually, it is not a priority right now. Having put this out to sea is enough work for me for a while.

Joen, this is awesome news! I have had so much trouble finding good wordpress themes for friends, so this will double my options! (Before this, IMHO the only good WP theme available was Kubrick).

Great job, and don’t worry about updating noscope too much. It will continue to look great. 🙂

  2. Welcome to the scene boi! This is indeed great news 😀

    I’m speechless.

  7. Joen says:

Thank you all, you’re all way too kind.

    K2 watch out 😉

Oh no, Fauna is no-where near being a competitor to K2 and it never will. K2 is a completely different market and is, in my opinion, much more than a theme. In the words of the authors, a mod. So no reason for K2 to watch out. Kubrick on the other hand 😉

Like Michael said on his site: “If he had released it earlier I would have never started Kubrick”. I can’t wait to check it out and learn all your secrets…

Like Michael said on his site: ?If he had released it earlier I would have never started Kubrick?.

See but that wouldn’t have worked. As I also responded on Michaels site, if it wasn’t for Kubrick, I wouldn’t have released Fauna. It’s like the time-travel conflict in Terminator…

Already using it on Splash Panel (at least until I sort out the design of that site). Gotta say though (and this is no slant on what Mike did with Kubrick) but Fauna is a better all around theme. It’s less obtrusive and you’ve designed it so that the header can look any which way you want. The image at the top doesn’t have a direct imact on the rest of theme, which is the case with most themes out there (Rin and Manji included).

Definitely a great thing for the WordPress community. Now I can steal ideas without feeling bad :).

you should’ve auctioned it off to the highest bidder as a sole release and used the profits as donations. While it’s a gorgeous theme, now a lot more people will have it and it’s not going to be as sweet because so many people will have it. Nonetheless, another nicely done piece… can’t wait to see your next site eveolution!

    Finally. Fantastic, Joen.

Joen, I just took a look at the Fauna slideshow over at Flickr. Exactly how much time transpired ‘tween the design we all know and love and the original concept? I ask because looking at the images they just show this tremendous amount of progress and growth, of the design and the designer.

  14. Brenda says:

Thanks for the theme! I’m now using it on my site, and I love the look and ease of use. I’ve managed to incorporate Ultimate Tag Warrior as well, which was quite simple. Cheers!

    Steve,

you should?ve auctioned it off to the highest bidder as a sole release and used the profits as donations. While it?s a gorgeous theme, now a lot more people will have it and it?s not going to be as sweet because so many people will have it.

You make an interesting case, but I’m going to disagree with you. First of all thanks, I’m glad you like the theme.

Secondly, no I don’t think it’ll be less sweet because more people have it. It’s like if a hundred people wear the same sweater, it can still be a really nice sweater. Plus, I think the options for customizing the theme are pretty good so I’m not really worried… If I were, I’d have released it later: after all, Noscope is going to keep Fauna as draping for quite a while still.

As for auctioning off the theme… well, it would be a one-time sum of money. While there’s no way I can actually calculate what people choose to donate, I’m going to try and start off with a little faith. If it seems nothing happens, I might throw Google ads on the site and let them go to charity. Most important, I think, is the message, that donating to charity is not only relevant when tsunamis or quakes strike, but as part of the privileged west we should actually consider putting it into our budget. End rant: opinions may differ.

    Chris,

Exactly how much time transpired ?tween the design we all know and love and the original concept? I ask because looking at the images they just show this tremendous amount of progress and growth, of the design and the designer.

Thanks, wow you’re all in a generous mood today huh?

Well, the earliest design that was modified, tweaked, changed and morphed into what Fauna is today, was initially designed for use May 2002. So that’s almost four years of development. During that course, not only the aesthetics have changed, but the layout, the interface, heck I’ve even been past html frames and tables.

This is awesome Joen! And I can’t wait for Noscope’s redesign. Don’t care how long it’ll take, but I’m sure it’ll be good. 🙂

  17. Nik says:

Nice work Joen… I didn’t see that coming at all!

  18. Joen says:

    Thanks again all.

I didn?t see that coming at all!

Why? I’m one of the good guys, remember?
