It’s your blog, go for it if you must. One request though, make them look nice.

  2. Joen says:

    I’m still undecided.

Trust me, they’ll be stylized in the same way as the theme selected (i.e. nocturnal fauna would have dark google ads).

Furthermore, the google ads will be in an iframe, so if people sincerely dislike them, they can in fact filter them away using Firefox Adblock without ruining the layout.

In the end, if I do choose to try them out, I’ll be seeing whether it’s worthwhile (i.e. I make a worthwhile sum of dough). If not, out they go.

I’m sure you’d earn a fair bit o’ moolah. I wouldn’t worry about putting them in an iframe though. the ads on my site (what? chris has ads?) just disappear when an adblocker is used and don’t affect the site layout. Most folks don’t even know they exist.

Plus, they’re fun. It’s great when I’m writing one of my “I’m an atheist, boo!” posts and the ads are for bible camp or some such thing.

I think it’s a brilliant idea, you should definitely do it. I’ve been thinking about doing it myself, not because I think I will make any real money out of it (I simply can’t with the number of visitors I’m getting) but just for fun.

Hope you do it, and tell the rest of us how it goes and feels.

  5. Joen says:

Thanks for your comments. I think I’ll try it out.

Worst case scenario, it’s a bad experience and I’ll take them off again.

    Anders,

Hope you do it, and tell the rest of us how it goes and feels.

I’ll definitely give it a write-up. If not before, then atleast after testing them out properly.

Don’t bother. I’ve not heard a single success story from adsense, seriously. It just might pay off your hosting bill at the end of the year, then again it probably won’t 🙂 Give it a go though, nothing to loose.

  7. Nik says:

We all get a cut you say? Sounds like an awesome idea!

Oh, you didn’t say that… ah well, give it a go anyway, I think they’re pretty unobtrusive if you style ’em up a bit! 🙂

  8. Yeah I kinda second Khaled. I get decent traffic, and I have never made over 25 dollars US in one month.

There are very few sites that can really turn a profit on them, without compromising your integrity at least 😉

  9. Oh, and I am verrrry impressed that this was posted 35 years and 8 months ago. That is something really special.

  10. Joen says:

Hmm. I’m surely not getting more visitors than you guys.

Well, I have to try this out, and see how it works to get a feel for it. If it doesn’t pay off, I’ll remove them again.

Yeah, it’s been like that for a while, but I’m pretty lazy. My guess is it’s a server date problem, but it could be Time Since. Any ideas?

  11. Jonas Rabbe says:

My gut feeling is that it is a Time Since problem. Some PHP servers return GMT corrected time using the time() function, however, Time Since does its own GMT correction leading to wrong time. If the is corrected too much it can be seriously screwed up, I reproduced it almost 6 months ago, but can’t remember what I ended up doing to fix it, I’ll look when I come home tonight (or maybe tomorrow).

  12. Joen says:

I’d appreciate any solutions you can give, but don’t stress it. The problem has been there for months, I don’t mind it being there a few more weeks.

  13. Joen says:

I have now added Google ads.

I have tried making them as non-intrusive as possibe. They’re only on individual pages such as this, and they’ll take into account what current Noscope style you’re using.

Let me know what you think.

  14. Nik says:

    Whur are they!? heh! 😉

  15. Chris says:

    Looks good, Joen.

  16. Joen says:

Thanks Nik, Chris. I’m also pretty satisfied.

Now to see whether it pays off 🙂

  17. Jonas Rabbe says:

As I was the first to voice concerns, I guess I should just follow up. Just want to say it looks nice. Not too invasive, quite subtle, and blends well into the design. I wouldn’t give ads my approval, but this is about as close as it gets.

  18. Joen says:

I’m glad you don’t find it too invasive, Jonas. Trust me, if enough people took serious offense at them, gone they were. (Oh, and if I don’t make a worthwhile buck off of it, gone they are too).

Finally, I truly don’t mind if you install Firefox adblock and remove the ad forcefully. The layout should look like before, except for an extra 8px margin maybe.

  19. Jonas Rabbe says:

Btw, are they only on the entries? I’ve looked around, and can’t find them anywhere else.

  20. Joen says:

Yep, only on entries, and only just before the comments. There’s no reason to pester people 🙂

  21. Joen says:

It is very likely that I’ll nuke the ads pretty soon.

So far it looks like I’m making ? to 1 buck a day, which is nowhere near worth having ads for. I’m sure different placement would increase clickrate, but not without borking the design more than I’m ready to do.
