April '05 Installment: Pointless

Totally pointless, but kinda cool looking 3d images with light streaks coming out of the wazoo, that make little or no sense.

About “Pointless”

I’ve always been impressed with the Photoshop skills of graphic designers Jens Karlsson & James Widegren. I’m referring to their skillfully cut together composite images containing 3d shapes and light streaks. I’ve found these images intriguing, impressive: how were they put together? As for the actual content of these types of images, I never gave them much thought. In fact, I always found them to be utterly pointless.

Perfect for Noscope.

So for April, I decided to explore how this was done, using what Photoshop knowledge I have accumulated over my 4 years of doing Noscope. The recipe was this:

  1. Extrapolate flat 3d shapes in a 3d app
  2. Add a light additive material
  3. Render as best possible
  4. Add colours and gradients in Photoshop
  5. Grab a lumakey such as a picture of smoke, and use that as a channel in Photoshop
  6. Use that channel as selection, and scale the smoke to fit as though it was light

Ultimately, I only made 1 picture. The big secret (except for using lumakeys, which I’ll probably go in to at another time), is to spend A LOT of time just painting and nudging. This was time I didn’t have this month. So I made one picture, and tinted it in 5 colours.

Yeah, so sue me. Atleast you can now pick your favourite and do some colour psychology:

  • If you pick #1, you’re the serious type.
  • Number 2 is for energetic people who might like money and/or just sunlight
  • Number 3 gets picked by people who like to relax and/or need to
  • 4 is kinda like 2, but less
  • If you pick #5, you’re the passionate type

Yep, I learned that in school.

Now that April is launched, I’m going to celebrate. Noscope works again (including photography) and best of all, spring is here!

You left off the “view this installment link”

    2005/04/

Also, it seems the installments section is bugging out. Continual refreshes without loading and the like.

Feel free to delete me. I like the blue one, but I’ve no idea that I’m all that serious. 🙂

  2. Joen says:

    Link added, thanks.

Ack, that section is annoying me sooo much!

You’re using Safari right ? Try following a link that doesn’t have the # in the URL. It used to work, I seem to remember. OR, try this link instead.

I like the blue one, but I’ve no idea that I’m all that serious.

Well it’s not an exact science, but still “what you like” reflects “who you are”. The faulty aspect is that you don’t have to like the shape at all 🙂

    You?re using Safari right ?

Yeah. This has never happened before. Doesn’t matter which link I follow. The refresh cycle doesn’t happen until I click in a clickable area.

the bar at the top that normally dispalys the noscope logo and the 1 2 3 4 5 only displays the 1. Any click in that area starts the freakiness.

I’ve had problems (in Safari) earlier, but it seems to work now.

See, I’m getting just the opposite. Aren’t kooky browser quirks fun? For instance my main site won’t load in a text-only browser link Links. Baffling.

  6. Jonas Rabbe says:

I haven’t checked the installments after noscope went down over easter, and I imagined Joen scrambling behind the scenes between 10.30 and 12.15 to correct things, but I guess not.

my main site won?t load in a text-only browser link Links.

link Links? I’m sorry, but while I understood the words, the meaning was lost.

That made me laugh. Typo. “like Links”.

  8. Jonas Rabbe says:

Pretty cool. I’ve never seen Links before, only ever played with Lynx, but Links is much cooler.

For instance my main site won?t load in a text-only browser link Links. Baffling.

Not so baffling, your site doesn’t specify a content type in the header, so the text-only (I accidentally wrote text-long, freudian slip?) browser doesn’t know how to render it, modern browser look at the data they receive in this case and try to figure it out, but appearantly Links doesn’t. The following line needs to be included in the header:

    Content-Type: text/html

why it isn’t already is beyond me.

Joen: Sorry for going this much off topic, I promise to try and not do it again.

Gracias. That’s been bugging me nutty. No idea when I might have deleted that. I know I must have done it.

Joen, I’m turning your blog into my own private support forum and bicycling awareness network.

By the way was this post supposed to be about some sort of pretty picture or something?

  11. Joen says:

Don’t worry about going off topic, I generally don’t mind. Especially because discussions here are usually not Slashdot size. When that happens, I might change my opinion, but for now, chat away.

I haven’t checked the installments after noscope went down over easter, and I imagined Joen scrambling behind the scenes between 10.30 and 12.15 to correct things, but I guess not.

Yeah, sorry about that. I can’t say I scrambled, though. In fact, I pretty much said “fuck it”, and went skiing! (Photos soon, I promise). What’s keeping it buggy now, is the fact that I rarely have access to my girlfriends laptop (where I can test in Safari), and I don’t have internet at home.

On the upside, this is a giant personal leap for me. I’ve been wanting to care less for a while now, and truly being able to let this site slip for a few days is kinda refreshing.

In case you think I’m sarcastic or ironic, just to make sure: I’m not. I’m serious. 🙂

Well, you could have just asked me to teach you. I’m good at this sort of thing, just witness the neglegt of my blog, basically since Christmas. I’ll hide behind the excuse of my master’s thesis, but I don’t think that’ll work anymore.

The beach.. head to the beach! It’s sun and waves all the way from now on… Isn’t too much blogging like videoing everything then watching it later… better to enjoy it 110% at the time perhaps? Still think the whole thing is ‘cool as’ though as I have met great designers through my blogs and they’ve been fantastically helpful! And I’m here adding to this thread, so…

Sorry off-topic… my last post on this one, honest! 🙂

  14. Nik says:

Installments work ok for me… except as Chris mentioned only ‘1’ is visible in the top bar… but I can still use the other 4 buttons, they’re just not visible (until I’ve clicked them that is).

No refresh weirdness here! It all looks cool! I like those images.. never known how to create them. Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

    What no Kate? 🙂

  15. khaled says:

Love it, one of my favourites so far. I actually liked the blue and red version more, but those are my prefered colours. So that makes me both serious and passionate,… pretty spot on.

  16. Joen says:

Thanks all for your Safari feedback. I’ll look in to it… at some point.

    Nik,

No Kate this month. I’ve just been re-using the same music for a while now. I’m going to take a break from the music and do some simpler installments.

    khaled,

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

The yellow one (as used in the header) is my preferred choice.

what no source code for this one??? :-(((

    beautiful.

  18. Joen says:

    Thanks, I appreciate it.

I’ll consider releasing some source for this.
